This bronze He
(wine vessel) is made in shape of a winged animal with its head lifted up, mouth
widely open as the spout of this vessel, short tail as handle, deep and round
belly, forward-walking four legs as the feet, band-type loop handle in shape of
dragon, a tiny winged animal as an ornament upon the lid, a small chain linking
the lid and the body, variant of dragon design on the surface of the lid, relief
dragon and five up-raised wings designs on both sides of the belly and
two dragons constituting
exactly the two wings of on-this-bronze-He-body winged animal.
Bronze He prevailed in the Shang and Zhou
dynasties as a container for mixing water and alcohol used by nobles at the
banquet and worship ceremony. Generally, bronze He was made in round shape with
large capacity or loop
handle convenient for pouring.
Wing animal image appeared earlier in
west Asia. Thiswinged-animal-shaped
bronze He with loop handle dating back to the Spring & Autumn Period is made in
shape of four-leg-winged animal
coming from “Griffin” in
western mythology which is also called the “Griffon” having eagle head, lion
body and wings. It shows the communication and fusion of Chinese and western
culture.
