Exhibition of Rare Masks from Central Africa

  Masks have a long history in Africa. Images of a woman dancing with a mask have been found on prehistoric rock paintings in the southern part of the Sahara. The most representative areas for masking are located in West and Central Africa, where masks were very popular and well developed.
  Africans create masks mostly focusing on the topics of ceremonies of rain-praying, marriage, funeral, seeding and other mysterious religious activities,ritual masking ceremonies, masks are also used in African tribes’ daily life.

  In order to show the extraordinary charm of African masks, our museum has brought in over 118 masks from Belgium. As well as musical instruments and costumes, which were used in ancient Central African ceremonies. Moreover, we will present African masks with related music and video. Some of the artifacts have already been exhibited in America, France, Denmark, Holland, Germany and Belgium in many well-known museums. However, most of them are being shown in public for the first time. Now, let’s dance with the dizzying firelight, passionate music, and embrace the beauty of the mysterious custom and culture from these fancy masks.
