Chinese opera schools to showcase education achievements in performance season

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Traditional Chinese opera schools and institutions nationwide will showcase their educational achievements in a performance season set to kick off in Beijing Friday.

The event is part of the celebrations of the 70th founding anniversary of the People's Republic of China, the China Culture Daily reported Wednesday.

Performers from 64 opera schools and institutions will present 94 plays from 52 types of traditional Chinese opera at the Chang'an Grand Theater.

During the 20-day performance season, audiences will have the chance to savor the beauty of a diverse variety of Chinese opera including the widely-known Peking opera and Kunqu opera, as well as rare local operas, the report said.

Statistics show that there are currently 348 types of Chinese opera and most of them are unfamiliar to audiences. The country has less than 70 opera schools and institutions where no more than 60 types of opera are included in the curricula, said the paper.

The performance season, supported by the China National Arts Fund, is aimed at exploring new models of opera education to better preserve and develop the ancient art form.
